In the Netherlands, Zwolle is known as a bicycle city, therefore the accessibility of public transport by bike is very important for the city. Hence, the main bicycle parking facility is the underground Bicycle Parking directly under the Stationsplein, which opened in late 2020 and accommodates 5,800 bicycles. The innovative architecture and thoughtful design also serve as a rainwater collection system for the surrounding greenery.
The facility offers accessible 24/7 parking, and there are three large entrances and exits. Comfort and safety were major themes when designing the structure and a physical security method was needed between the entrances to the station and the bicycle parking area.
Stackdoor security grills were installed at all three of the entrances and exits. This included a special oval Stackdoor with an extra-large width.
Not only was this project a challenge because of the XXL size of the opening, but special requirements from the architect to avoid cables and axles also had to be met. This unusual site situation resulted in the installation of two motors, one each side, with exact synchronisation between the two operating motors.
Detailed engineering was required to ensure that the whole weight of the Stackdoor grille, (more than 800 Kg), was contained safely in the stainless steel guides.
Our expert technicians designed and installed a special profile construction to realize this and the team in the Netherlands ensured that the grille was exactly level when operating.
