TERMINAL 3, JULIUS NYERERE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, TANZANIA

THE CLIENT

The opening of Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in August 2019 made it one of the most modern aviation infrastructures in East Africa. Air Tanzania’s fleet expansion with Airbus A220-300s and Boeing 787-8s, had made the case for Terminal 3 to be built at a cost of $314 million and increased the total airport capacity from 6 million to 8 million passengers.

THE CASE

Parking, shops, bars, and air-conditioned halls allow passengers to wait for their flight in the best conditions and with a flight punctuality greater than 90%, the airport guarantees a seamless air travel experience.
The architecture for Terminal 3 has a very simple, clear design with a skylight roof to give a bright and airy feel to the environment.
As with many airports the zoning of areas so that they cannot be accessed out of working hours or to facilitate the direction of footfall, is not uncommon. However, this often leads to wide openings needing a security solution whilst still achieving the open-air feeling of the building.
These vast dimensions are not achievable with a classic roller shutter or grille, or folding gates without having additional central supporting columns.

THE SOLUTION

The large spans that can be achieved with the Stackdoor XXL gave the ideal solution and multiple, large stacking grilles were made specifically for this site. The small stacking space of the grille required at the top of the opening enabled the Stackdoor grilles to be completely hidden in the ceiling when open, and no supporting columns or potentially dangerous floor fixings were required.

The lightweight Stackdoor XXL grilles are designed to give maximum visibility without compromising on security whilst the open structure maintains an attractive appearance and blends with the modern architecture of the building.
